Helmut Newton is one of the most recognized icons of erotically charged and provocative black-and-white fashion photography. His work influence many photographers, including myself. His work appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Playboy, and too many other publications to list.
In 1990, I had a rare opportunity to meet Helmut Newton in person when I briefly worked at Samy’s Camera Rental Counter. He was super polite and autographed his book “Portraits” for me. Afterward he purchased two Pentax 6×7 film bodies and a couple of lenses. Working at a large camera store in Los Angeles certainly has its perks, meeting actors and famous photographers.
The other day I found this fantastic video of Helmut Newton at work. The video is 53 minutes, and has terrific footage of him talking about his work and directing models. This video is a real treasure to watch. The quotes are hilarious, the footage is amazing and informative, quite simply put….this is the best and most entertaining documentary of Helmut Newton on the web. Enjoy!
Even if you don’t like his work, the video is still golden. Keep in mind, video is Not Safe To Watch at work for US audiences…it is Mr. Helmut Newton at work!
