One Light Lookbook Lighting Tutorial
The one light high key portrait lighting technique is perfect for fashion catalog photography. The lighting diagram below explains this simple lighting setup. A 400w/s monolight will work, but 600w/s or more is recommended for this lighting setup.
A lookbook is a portfolio or catalog of images that represents one line of a designers products, such as a spring fashion line. Lookbook and catalog photography is something that one can shoot in every city, small or large. Prom dress and wedding boutiques have new designs every year.

Location Fashion Shoot Tutorial with Lighting Diagrams
The location fashion shoot presents additional requirements over the studio fashion shoot. For this location shoot we needed a gasoline generator to power our 1000w/s Photogenic mono lights and we needed a semi-private public beach access. Tim and I spent the morning meeting with the two wardrobe designers and scouted the West Seattle Alki Beach later that afternoon.
Our two lighting modifiers consisted of a 22″ Beauty Dish and a large 5′x8′ Ripstop Nylon Panel. We also used a combination of the two modifiers in unison for a very nice light quality that you should try for outdoor portraits! Watch the video and pay special attention to the image of the yellow dress and purple dress. This BD/Nylon Panel combo provides a beautiful soft light quality and the skintones just glow.
This video features Seattle wardrobe designers, Kimmi Designs and Mac Fashion House. Our friend, Kay Matthews did the hair and makeup styling.
We use very simple lighting, less is more and appears natural. No photoshop fixes for lighting, just a simple film curve and color toning.

Double Exposure TV Show: Markus Klinko and Indrani
I just watched 3 Markus Klinko photographer clips on Hulu.com and wanted to share them with you, kinda funny if you ask me. Thank goodness Tim and I are much more relaxed when we shoot, lol.
Markus Klinko, Indrani, and the entire crew come together to make this photoshoot happen. The videos begin with a short infomercial, just bear with it.

Fashion, Glamour and Portrait Lighting Explained
What is fashion lighting, what is glamour lighting, what is portrait lighting? Basically, it is all the same. What sets the images apart is how we style the wardrobe, the makeup/hair styling, and how we pose the subject.
We can use a octabox for fashion, glamour, or portraits. We are lighting with the same modifier and simply changing the wardrobe, the makeup/hair styling, and how we pose the subject. A lighting modifier does not determine what kind of image we shoot. Read on and see the images below for a better explanation.
I have stated this several times before, so let me say it again. When I have a shoot, whether it is fashion, glamour or portrait, I light them all the same. It is not like I wake up one morning and say, “today we do fashion lighting”.
Allow me go into more detail and explain myself. It amuses me when folks on photography forums ask what fashion, glamour, or portrait lighting is. Maybe they are asking us “What is great lighting” instead, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. What determines the image genre is not the lighting, it is the pose, the wardrobe, and the makeup/hair styling.

How to Find Great Fashion and Glamour Models
Finding good fashion and glamour models is not difficult, all you need is your computer and internet access. In this topic I will cover working with modeling agency’s and a two websites to locate quality fashion and glamour models. As well as a few do’s and don’ts. Mostly common sense stuff, but it needs to be said.
Back in the day of film and before computers, I worked with a modeling agency in my community in Santa Barbara, CA. At that time I was attending Brooks Institute of Photography and in the Advertising Photography program. Our first assignment was to photograph people for portraits. The assignment consisted of photographing 25 complete strangers in one week, the teachers goal was for us to overcome our fear of working with unfamiliar subjects. Needless to say, that worked and today I am comfortable in any situation, but more importantly, I learned how to make a subject comfortable in the first 5 minutes they entered my studio. How to Assemble a Fashion or Glamour Photo Styling Team
Great fashion and glamour photographers have a great photo styling team. This article will discuss how I found my makeup/hair stylist and wardrobe stylist, and you can to.
Every image in my Fashion or People book has a team of people behind it. These people are makeup artists, hair stylists, and wardrobe stylists. My skills are in photography, lighting, posing the model, casting the model, and finally assembling the right stylists and MU artists for each shoot. Think of your role as the crew leader and general manager. I do not dictate the shoot, but rather keep us on a theme and make sure that we are all on the same page.

3 Types of Fashion Images – Catalog – Editorial – High Fashion
What are the 3 basic types of fashion images. Generally speaking, we have catalog, editorial, and high fashion images. Lets discuss what is a fashion image and what are the different fashion image styles.
I get this question all the time. Generally speaking, fashion photography is about selling clothing and a lifestyle. As the viewer, I want to see fabulous styling and a believable expression on the model. The wardrobe should be well presented and I need to be able to see it. If all I see is half naked girls looking sexy and provocative, chances are pretty good that this is not a fashion photograph, but rather a glamour photograph. I do not mean to put down anyone’s style, just wanted to explain the difference….and sometimes it is a thin line. Continue reading
