Creative Lighting for People Photography is the most complete video tutorial for people lighting. This video includes everything from the highly acclaimed “Fashion & Glamour Lighting Revisited V.2″ video, including specific new tutorials for the portrait photographer, and over 200+ new voice-overs.

This is the lighting tutorial video that I would have wanted while attending Brooks Institute of Photography. The video examines fashion, glamour, and portrait lighting using just 1 or 2 light sources. Follow me as I comment on the lighting diagrams and watch behind-the-scenes video of 18 models. This video spans what I have learned over the last 20+ years of photographing and modifying the light quality of my studio flash units to create a 3-dimensional and cinematic light quality.

I use both traditional light modifiers and also several DIY custom built modifiers. It is important to understand that lighting modifiers do not necessarily be expensive; they just have to work consistently under varying environments. In fact, I use an inexpensive brand of mono-head flash units to create the images both in the video and for my commercial portfolio.

The specific light modifiers discussed include the 22” Beauty Dish w/Grid, Modified 48” Octabox w/Grid, a DIY Ring-light, Strobe Head w/7” Grid, Strobe Head Bare-bulb, Strobe Head w/Reflector, 4 different versions of the V-Bank, and several flat panel variants. Each image in the video uses a different combination of the modifiers to demonstrate the degree of flexibility they can offer the photographer.

As a commercial photographer, I prefer to have visual explanations, and that is the format for all the tutorials. This video is about LIGHTING. The inspiration for this video was to teach LIGHTING, not Photoshop or how to fix it later. Show me the lights, the modifiers, and toss in a few tips on when to use these lights.

Testimonials

“I love your work. I have just bought the video and I think the experience and the techniques you offer are unparalleled, comparing to whats on the market today. They are achievable and inexpensive, Best Buy. Please release more videos, as I will gladly buy them.” – M. Zorman

“People… its one of the best videos out there… PERIOD! The man really takes you to school! He exhausts the subject! Great job Thorsten!” – David Griffin, A.K.A. The Prince of Cheap of Studiolighting.net

“You’re video changed the way I look at and manage my lighting, I’ve never felt more in control of my lighting and that’s with a huge thanks to your video.” – KD

“+1 on the Thorsten video. What’s even better is his customer service. I was having a problem with the ripstop nylon on my DIY light panel. Posted the problem here, Thorsten replied on the forum, then followed up with some emails and a phone call to make sure my problem was resolved. You can’t ask more than that! Now, mind you, my ripstop problem, was my problem, but he was concerned that I be able to achieve the same lighting he had. Great guy! Any product to which Thorsten’s name is applied is a must purchase. No financial interest, just an extremely satisfied customer.” – stefeb

“Thank you so much for creating something for those photographers that are new to this game. They are so so lost in direction were they need to be looking in order to learn and grow. They read technical manuals and forums as if they were the bible. Getting severely lost in “Techi” stuff or names or what they think are “Hip” names and trends often created by someone new to photography themselves. I commend you for trying to get them to focus on what is actually important and that’s “Lighting”. – rmstudio

“This is one of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen. Thorsten walks you through how he creates his awesome images from start to finish.” – JK

“If you don’t own this video, get it now.” – VW8802

“Thorsten, I know I said thanks on Model Mayhem but your video was a real eye opener for someone who never uses more than 2 lights… I’d been stacking them for full length fashion, now I have my panels and my second head is put to better use! Great video! – Brian (www.brianrolfe.net)

“Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned shooter, there is something in this video for everyone. Definitely worth the money. I just wish this had come out when I started shooting. Would have saved me a lot of time.”- cknight84

“Just have to echo everyone else. Videos like this are the one you can watch over and over, and as you progress you pickup and ‘get’ more and more from it as you’re “ready”. Anyway, Thanks Thorsten! ” – Hook

“Went back and watched the video again. You make this look so simple. ” – Brad

“Very nice. Came across this earlier, and bought the full version. Best tutorial for people/model photography I’ve seen. In it, they showed me how to build this panel that i”ve been using ever since with my strobes.” – Highly recommend. 5/5

“Very nice video I feel I have learn something tonight.. Photography for me is understanding I don’t know everything and being willing to learn something new each day”.. – Rome, ProPhotoHouston02

VISUAL FUEL FOR THE CREATIVE ENGINE!

I own a pretty decent sized library of books and videos on photographic lighting and styling. However, I must say that THIS video has to be one of the most practical and motivating tools I’ve acquired to date.

Thorsten does an excellent job of explaining the “tools of the trade (lights and modifiers),” all while showing how to accomplish quality lighting without breaking the bank. Aside from general lighting instruction, he also spends time helping viewers hone their workflow, and really gives a great mini-tutorial on pulling out the most detail from your exposures. Once giving a digital imaging foundational overview, you get right to the meat of the lighting lessons, for both studio and location lighting.

I love the accompanying lighting diagrams, which show not only the lights and modifiers used, along with their placement, but each one also includes a “final image” to show what the intended outcome should look like. You can easily print them and take them with you, or use them as a point of reference when planning a shoot. Superb resource.

The pace of the video is great. Thorsten spends just the right amount of time on each lighting setup, allowing you time to understand the setup being viewed, and whetting your appetite for the next one. I didn’t feel rushed nor was I tempted to pause or rewind the video after each setup. I’ve watched it twice now all the way through while taking notes and referencing magazine images, and I’m constantly amazed at the quality of light I am able to attain.

This is a marvelous instructional tool. I would easily recommend this video to anyone wanting to step up their lighting game, especially those wanting to do glamour and high-end fashion. It has definitely opened my eyes. Thanks for making this video, Thorsten!
